Share prices of data centre real estate investment trusts (REITs) globally slumped over the past week after China-based artificial intelligence (AI) company DeepSeek released a model that shocked observers.
US-listed REITs like Digital Realty Trust and Equinix fell by 5-7% while Asia-Pacific players such as Singapore’s Keppel DC REIT and Digital Core REIT declined by as much as 8% over the course of the week.
The sell-off reflects growing investor anxiety about the long-term demand for large-scale data centres, triggered by a cost-efficient AI breakthrough from DeepSeek.
